Psychological Assessment for Planned Surgery

Surgery can involve significant physical, emotional and lifestyle changes. A psychological readiness assessment provides an opportunity to consider the person’s understanding, expectations, decision-making, mental health and available supports before proceeding.

Zephyr provides readiness assessments for:

Cosmetic Surgery and Bariatric Surgery, plus other planned surgical procedures where psychological assessment has been requested...

A Respectful and Individualised Process

The purpose is not to judge appearance, body size or a person’s wish to undergo surgery. It is to support informed decision-making, identify any psychological factors that may affect preparation or recovery, and recommend additional support where appropriate.

The assessment may consider:

Reasons for seeking surgery

Understanding of the procedure, risks and recovery

Expectations about likely outcomes

Relevant mental health and treatment history

Body image and self-perception

Coping strategies and lifestyle changes

Social and practical supports

Capacity for informed decision-making

Readiness for post-operative adjustment

A report can be provided to the referring surgeon or medical practitioner with the client’s consent and in accordance with the agreed purpose of the assessment.
